About the Commissionerate

Tracing the legacy, strategic vision, and structural hierarchy of the Greater Chennai City Police since 1856.

Our Legacy

The Greater Chennai City Police was established in 1856 as the Madras City Police. For over 170 years, we have transitioned from traditional law enforcement watchmen to one of India's largest and most technologically advanced metropolitan police commissionerates.

Operating under a dedicated Commissioner system, the Greater Chennai City Police possesses unique regulatory and administrative authority. This structure permits immediate, coordinated interventions in metropolitan crime detection, traffic management, crowd control, and community safety services.

Vision & Strategic Goals

"To build a crime-free, digitally secure city using predictive smart policing technologies, ensuring complete public accountability, and fostering a collaborative partnership with the citizens we serve."

Leadership

Thiru. A. Arun, IPS

The Commissioner commands a force of more than 20,000 officers and personnel. Working alongside Additional Commissioners, Joint Commissioners, and Deputy Commissioners, the command structure operates to keep Chennai secure.
